Thecarvingof afamily Coat of Armsinlimewood, thedifferent steps
Patrick Damiaens, Ornamental Woodcarver
First I made a drawing of the Family coat of Arms.
The customer provides me an example of the crest ( which can be a drawing, painting,... his signet ring.) The supplied information shall serve for making a work -carve drawing . The drawing with the correct outlines and necessary details. This Coat of arms was approved by the Flemish Heraldic College of VVF.
The properdrawing isredrawn ontracing paper and secured bythumbnails on the wood. The drawing is madeby means ofcarbon paperandby a penis applied to thewood.Thecontours ofthe weaponare nowon the limewood.
With a band saworjigsawwecut outthe contours ofthe coat of arms.
The cut outsectionsare now glued on a plate(MDF).This methodof fasteningensures us that thecoat of arms will be in a stable position on theworkbench.Thenewspaperbetweenplate and woodwill laterservefor an easyseparation.
The actualcarvingcan begin. This stageis calledmodeling. Many years ofstudies andfull-timeexperienceare crucial.
Now comesthe importance of thecorrectlysawingforward. Due tothe modelingthe original drawings will disappear. In this stage, the drawing will be placed back on thecrude forms ofthe coat of armsby usinga markerorpencil.
This isthe most important stageof the arms. Theornaments, heraldicdetails andcarvinggets itsproper height.Insight intothe depthsand the reliefof the ornament, and knowledge of themaximum depthof an ornamentare from greatimportance, as well asroutine andexperience in thisart form. The useofplaster modelsand imagescanalso be very helpfulin this stage.
The piece of the crestis finished andwillberemoved from the plate, the backsidewillnowcarved. This processisrepeated each timewith eachindividual partofthe family crest.
The actualcoat of armsis cutnow and also the texton a ribbon (Deus nobiscum) 'God with us'
