A number of family crests and coats of arms in wood that I have created in recent years. Usually these heraldic sculptures are done in lime wood and sometimes they are given heraldic colours, but mostly they remain uncoloured.

Heraldic Family Arms carved in wood is one of my specialities. It is always a personal challenge to be allowed to carve a family coat of arms in wood. Heraldry in wood is a very interesting subject and I also always look forward to being able to start a new commission for a heraldic family crest in wood.

You get to know interesting people who fascinate you with each 'their' fascinating family story or history. And for me personally, it is always nice to hear that they appreciate my craftsmanship and quality enormously.

Every heraldic coat of arms is different. It usually starts with an example as a source of inspiration that is provided by the client in the form of a drawing, old sketch or even by a signet ring. Our clientele consists of private individuals or nobility, but it also sometimes happens that the order comes from an institution, association or company.

One of my specialties is the carving of Heraldic family coat of arms and Crests in wood. To carve a family coat of arms in wood is a bit of a personal challenge for me. Heraldry is a most interesting subject and I always look forward to taking on new assignments involving heraldic Coat of Arms.

You learn about interesting people that captivate the imagination, all of whom have their own fascinating life story or family history. And for me personally it’s always nice to hear that my craftsmanship and quality are greatly appreciated.

Every heraldic coat of arms is different. Most of the time, it starts with an example that serves as a source of inspiration in the form of a drawing, an old sketch or some photographic material delivered to me by the client.

In some cases it occurs that the design for the family coat of arms is not entirely suited as the blueprint for the carving of it in wood.

This might be due to the fact that the design is in a format which is a lot smaller than what the client had in mind (e.g. a large heraldic panel), in which case the family coat of arms has to be redesigned. If one were to simply enlarge the small design, the proportions or the composition of the design would be distorted.

Usually things have to be added to the composition in order to make better use of the available space. It might also be that there is no logic to how the mantling was arranged, and it’s entirely possible that the design was never meant to be carried out in wood. After all, wood has its limitations.

It is equally important that the relief fits the dimensions of the coat of arms.

We always try to resolve these small and sometimes larger issues together with the client.

Welcome to my blog, my name is Patrick Damiaens and I am a full-time ornamental wood carver – but I am too a Heraldic woodcarver or Sculptor.

My activities focus on a single purpose, “ornamentation and decoration in wood”, and this in a wide range of applications; and I perform these tasks for an international clientele. Patrick Damiaens’ woodcarving workshop is located in the historic town of Maaseik (B) close to the Dutch border and just steps away from Germany. The workshop was stablished in 1990 and since then, the studio has acquired a good reputation in the design, manufacture, copying and restoration, with the different uses of carvings and ornaments in wood.

The work in the studio is divided into different categories.

There is the manufacturing of unique style furniture, specializing in furniture from the 18th century Liège style; another specialty is performing heraldic coats of arms, crests in wood.

Our clients are common individuals or from the nobility; but sometimes it happens that it is the assignment from an agency, association or company or even the government.
A wood carved Municipal arms or city arms; a memorial panel for an association or a wooden logo for a company is possible too. Sometimes we need to solve small and/or big problems in conjunction with the customer, in order to achieve a particular result. 

To respect the wishes of our national and international clientele, we cannot show you all the coats of arms that have been manufactured in our heraldic carving workshop.
