The Coat of arms “or Coat armour” dates back to the mid-12th century when knights began to have their shields decorated with marks to identify them.

These marks and colors evolved into a way to identify the bearer as a member of a certain family, clan or allegiance. The coat of arms represents the bearer’s family lineage and is traditionally passed down from fathers to sons.

A family crest is the element placed on top of the helm or helmet and indicates the rank or designation of the original bearer of the Coat of Arms.
The mantling is a depiction of the protective cloth worn by knights which is usually shown tattered or cut to shreds. Less often it is shown as an intact drape, suggesting that the bearer did not involve himself with combat, such as a clergyman.  At the bottom, a scroll bears a motto or the origin of the Family name.

From the stripes on the shield to the images depicted, the Coat of Arms is the coded family history of the person or family who owned the Coat of Arms. The study of Coats of Arms and their meaning is called Heraldry and in some countries the official Herald is appointed by the Government and has the only office able to issue and regulate Coats of Arms.

Nearly all surnames originating in Western or Eastern Europe have some or other version of a Coat of Arms. If you have a surname originating in Europe, somewhere in your genealogy, over the course of history, it is most likely that a member of your family rose to distinction and earned a Coat of Arms. This is a mark of your History and in a sense belongs to you.

A beautifully hand carved Coat of Arms is a symbol of honor and a family heirloom to hand down to future generations; a highly prized gift to someone who values their families’ origin and culture. It gives the bearer a sense of place and belonging; a reminder of a family’s ongoing responsibility to honor the family name.

Over the past eighteen years, the sign carver has produced many Coats of Arms of various sizes for Families, Schools and businesses. These have been either carved in wood or made of clay and cast in cement. We offer custom made Family Coats of Arms with colour or natural wood, cement (painted or plain) or painted resin.

Heraldic wood carving

One of my specialties is the carving of Heraldic family coat of arms and Crests in wood. To carve a family coat of arms in wood is a bit of a personal challenge for me. Heraldry is a most interesting subject and I always look forward to taking on new assignments involving heraldic Coat of Arms.

You learn about interesting people that captivate the imagination, all of whom have their own fascinating life story or family history. And for me personally it’s always nice to hear that my craftsmanship and quality are greatly appreciated.

Every heraldic coat of arms is different. Most of the time, it starts with an example that serves as a source of inspiration in the form of a drawing, an old sketch or some photographic material delivered to me by the client.
In some cases it occurs that the design for the family coat of arms is not entirely suited as the blueprint for the carving of it in wood.
This might be due to the fact that the design is in a format which is a lot smaller than what the client had in mind (e.g. a large heraldic panel), in which case the family coat of arms has to be redesigned. If one were to simply enlarge the small design, the proportions or the composition of the design would be distorted.

Family crest carved in limewood

Usually things have to be added to the composition in order to make better use of the available space. It might also be that there is no logic to how the mantling was arranged, and it’s entirely possible that the design was never meant to be carried out in wood. After all, wood has its limitations.

It is equally important that the relief fits the dimensions of the coat of arms.
We always try to resolve these small and sometimes larger issues together with the client.

Where does the name come from?

The today’s family name „Meinhold“ is a modification of the Old High German first name „maganwalt“, which means as far as power, force and violence and mastery. As a family name appears for example „Meynold“ already as of 830. But it exists a multitude of others dialect varieties such as the affectionate form „Meinl“, „Meinel“ or „Meinelt“, which were hand down as of 1391 and which were furthermore relevant.

As the family name Meinhold was originally a first name, it is no wonder that not all of the 3000 people living today with the same family name „Meinhold“ descended from the same person. Inversely it is possible, that a name-bearer „Meinel“ is akin with a name-bearer „Meinhold“.

The considered family name Meinhold, which can be easily backtracked into the sixteenth century, is a typical example of the modification of a family name, subject to time and location.
Like this, our oldest representative was called Peter Meinel. He was born around 1526 and lived in Tiefenloh next to Neudeck in West Bohemia. One of his grandchildren, who was born in 1583 in Hochofen near Neudeck (Adam Meinel) is with a probality bordering on certainty identical with the Adam Meinolt, born in Neudeck and married in Sosa near Eibenstock in 1608 in Saxony.
Adam's grandchild Gabriel on the other hand, immigrated from Sosa to Gera (in Thuringia). He was called from now on Meinhold, like all of his manly descendants today.

Which profession did actually the first Meinhold have?

Peter Meinel’s son Erasmus Meinel, who was born around 1555, was gamekeeper and merchant in Hochofen next to Neudeck in Bohemia. So he was a kind of forest supervisor, jar and tableware seller. His son Adam, who was born 1583 in Hochofen as Adam Meinel, lived as of 1608 in Sosa as a forger, like many of his descendants. Such as Adam's grandchild Gabriel Meinhold, who was born in Sosa 1641 and who administrated the job of blacksmith as of 1670 in Gera. Gabriel's son Christianus Meinhold, who was born in 1682 in Gera, succeeds to take part of the middle classes and arrived 1705 as a pharmacist from Gera in Stettin in Pomerania.
His descendants were since then chemist, clergymen, professors, teachers or also estate owner. It is eye-catching how often parts of the Meinhold family were gone to take up residence far away. Nowadays, it is not possible to say if this was the reason of business or religion (or both). The Protestant faith, which was already practiced by our ancestor, could be the leading reason, because of the confessional conflict in the past centuries.

Meinhold Family crest
And the coat of arms?

The coat of arms of the Pomeranian line of succession was documented for the first time in 1709 by  the Stettin pharmacist Christianus Meinhold. Corresponding to the “90th German genealogical almanac”, it shows an argentiferous anchor in blue colour near two golden Roses.  On the helmet with a blue-silvered cover, three foliated rose branches with each one flower. Besides that, the slogan of the Meinhold Family: „faithful and true!“, which was either the background of the coat of arms or the other way around, it was derived from it. Because the anchor is a synonym for fidelit

HERALDIC WOODCARVING | A Family Coat of Arms carved in wood | 100.000 views on YouTube

 Family Coat of arms
Carved in Wood

“Heraldic wood carving”

On November 22nd 2009 I posted my first educational wood carving video on YouTube. The idea behind my YouTubechannel  was to acquaint people with the art of wood carving, traditional craftsmanship, and to highlight the wide and diverse range of applications of  ornamental  woodcarving.

At first I was a bit skeptical about promoting my work on YouTube. I wasn’t immediately convinced about the use and added value of this “new medium”.
However, gradually this YouTube channel gained more and more popularity across the globe.
Indeed, YouTube has proven to be a valuable tool, which has enabled me to familiarize people with the métier of wood carving, and the complexity of artisanal craftsmanship.

100.000 views on Youtube

In August 2013 my first YouTube video reached 100.000 views, and needless to say I am very proud of that. As the contents of my uploads are strictly of a explorative or educational, rather than of a senseless mainstream nature, I am convinced that reaching 100.000 views is quite an recognition.

This particular video shows the various stages of carving a Family Crest in limewood. I truly enjoy the feedback, and going through the viewer comments.

 Thanks!

The BOLAND Family | Crest carved in wood | Family CREST carved on wooden panel | Custom-made

Heraldic Coat of Arms carved in wood

BOLAND Family , Netherlands

Boland
The Boland family and the village of Dinxperlo

Nothing is known for sure when it comes to the meaning and the origin of the name Boland. It isn’t one of the oldest family names of the village of Dinxperlo (on the border with Germany). It wasn’t until around the year 1600 that the name Boland first appeared in Dinxperlo.
The origin most likely lies just across the border with Germany, in and around Bocholt (DE), where it is still a widely spread name. The various forms of spelling of the name are a consequence of the fact that most of the people back then didn’t know how to read or write. The person drafting a deed decided how to spell the name and it was therefore common to write it down the way that it was pronounced at that time.
A number of variations I’ve encountered so far, are: Bolant(s), Booland(s), Boeland… Bohland is a very common variation in Germany.
The name Bo-land consists of two parts, of which the second part “land" is widely used on an international level. This might be the very reason that this name is commonly found outside of the Netherlands as well.
The international character of the name Boland is further emphasized by its use as a toponym throughout northern and western Europe and even beyond Europe.
Does the name in fact have something to do with “land” or “soil” used for a certain purpose? Isn’t it quite striking that the Old Dutch word for farmland “boulant” strongly resembles “boelant” and couldn’t “Bolant” easily be a derivative thereof?
Another possible explanation can be found in the words “vaste grond” (solid ground). The Norwegian-Swedish word “bo” means: established - be housed – reside – live in. In other words, to have a “vaste plaats” (a place of one’s own). Boland, a place of one’s own? In Africa Boland means “hoge land” (high land). In short, it’s anybody’s guess.

With thanks to M W Boland
